Clashes in flashpoint district in Hong Kong

There have further clashes between protesters and police in Hong Kong, in a flashpoint neighbourhood that has seen violent scuffles in recent weeks.

As thousands camp out peacefully elsewhere in the city centre, in the Mong Kok district protesters attempted to erect more barricades.

Scuffles broke out here last week when local residents and pro-Beijing supporters attempted to clear the streets.

Many Chinese from the mainland operate businesses in Mong Kok.

Protesters unhappy that Beijing wants to vet candidates for Hong Kong leadership elections in 2017 are back on the streets.

Their numbers dropped over the past week, when the government issued a deadline. But the protesters have regrouped after planned talks with the government did not materialise.

Hong Kong’s embattled leader today vowed to stay in office, warning students that their protest movement cannot continue and Beijing will not budge on the issue.
