Landscapers were recently attacked by Africanized bees in Douglas, Arizona. One of the men passed away as a result while another is left critically injured.

Four yard workers were cutting grass and weeding for an elderly homeowner. The bees came from a colony of approximately 800 thousand that had been staying in a large nest located in an attic.

According to witnesses, the 32-year-old employee went into cardiac arrest after being stung hundreds of times. Reportedly 7 people were stung, including the two other landscapers, a firefighter, exterminator and neighbor.

The Fire Chief in Douglas remarked “Apparently one of the workers was very close to the bees, the bees were located in the eaves of the home, just three feet away.”

Crews used pesticide and foam to tackle the swarm. Officials believe the hive was at least 10 years old.

There was so much honeycomb that it had started to out-grow the colony. The bees had started building another hive feet away from the first.

Parts of the home’s roof had to be removed and the ceiling was taken down so the hive could be reached. After the massive nest was exterminated, it filled a 55-gallon drum.
