Thousands of deadly accidents are caused every year by long-haul truck drivers getting distracted, or being too tired to properly operate their vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz has released details of its self-driving semi-truck that can navigate by itself through highway traffic.

The autonomous vehicle is called the Future Truck 2025, because the automobile manufacturer doesn’t expect this model to be on the roads for another ten years.

Equipped with radar sensors, advanced dual cameras and blindspot technology, the Highway Pilot features would allow the driver to relax during long hours on the road.

But they would still have to drive the vehicle on and off the highway and on any other roads, because the truck is only designed to maneuver itself in highway conditions.

The LED lights in the front of the rig change color from white to blue when it is in autopilot mode, and there is an audio and visual alarm if the system senses that the driver has to take over manually.

Doctor Wolfgang Bernhard, the Daimler board member for trucks and buses is quoted as saying: "It never gets tired. It’s always 100 percent and sharp. It’s never angry; it’s never distracted, so this is a much safer system.”
