Ukraine shelling hits school playground, killing at least 10 people

The eerily quiet aftermath in Ukraine of what had been a violent first day of school.

At least ten people were killed when shells hit a school playground in the eastern city of Donetsk.

No children were killed but witnesses say the dead include a parent and a teacher as well as six people inside this burnt-out minivan.

Donetsk is a stronghold of pro-Russian rebels fighting the Ukrainian army for greater independence from the central government in Kiev.

The shelling didn't deter students in the nearby town of Makiivka from celebrating their first day back at school.

Many schools in rebel held areas in the east are opening a month late because so many buildings have suffered damage during months of fighting.
