What's Behind Phantom Cell Phone Rings And Vibrations
  • 10 years ago
Almost everyone who has a cell phone has at some point believed they heard or felt their phone ringing, only to see that no one was calling them.

Have you ever experienced your cellphone vibrating or ringing, only to see that no one is calling?

Phantom vibrations and ringing are a relatively new phenomenon, coming into existence with the widespread use of cell phones.

It's believed that virtually every person in a developed country and with access to modern technology has experienced this phenomenon.

Considered a form of hallucination, various studies have attempted to figure out what causes people to experience these sensations. ,

A 2007 study found that two-thirds of its participants have experienced the phantom sensations.

David Laramie, a clinical psychologist in Beverly Hills who conducted this particular study, found two constants in those who experience the phantom calls: namely young people, and whether or not they used their phones to help with their emotional state, such as a means to relax.

Laramie said, "My hunch is at this point it’s a generational thing. Twenty- and thirty-somethings who grew up with cellphones and have them ingrained in their daily lives probably experience the effect more than older people or technophobes."

Another possible explanation could be our brain's habit of filling in the gaps. So when our clothing rubs against our skin, our brain mistakes it for our phone.

These phantom vibrations could be kept at bay by simply storing your phone somewhere like a bag. The audio hallucinations however, may just be here to stay.
