Death toll from West Africa Ebola outbreak tops 3,000

The death toll from an outbreak of Ebola in West Africa has now risen to 3,091 out of more that 6,574 probable, suspected and confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The latest data shows Liberia has recorded 1,830 deaths. That is around three times as many as in the other two most affected countries: Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile the International Monetary Fund has approved the equivalent of 100 million euros in aid to help Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone deal with the economic impact of the outbreak.

This comes as the WHO says it expects to start using two experimental Ebola vaccines in West Africa early next year.

Until then, it said transfusions of survivors’ blood may offer the best hope of treatment.
