Norway Will Pay Liberia To Stop Deforestation

Liberia agrees to end the destruction of its forests after Norway agrees to supply aid to the country.

iberia will become the first country within Africa to halt cutting down its trees.

The country has been promised development aid from Norway, receiving $150 million in return for ending deforestation.

The agreement includes Norway helping Liberia protect the forests by monitoring them for any illegal logging activity.

A political advisor to the Norwegian government said, "We hope Liberia will be able to cut emissions and reduce poverty at the same time."

Researchers believe the recent outbreak of Ebola on the continent is related to the destruction of forests.

Deforestation has brought people into proximity to natural reservoirs harboring the disease.

As the virus spreads, the concern has grown that people will increasingly turn to logging to earn money quickly.

The end of deforestation will also help out the animal population. Liberian forests are home to western chimpanzees, forest elephants and leopards, species whose populations are at risk for extinction.

The plan is to have 30% or more of forests in Liberia under protected status by 2020.

Environmental campaigners in Liberia are happy to see something is being done.
