Clashes erupted between Palestinians and Israeli police inside al Aqsa mosque compound on Wednesday (September 24), as Jewish worshippers entered the disputed compound ahead of the Hebrew New year which starts late on Wednesday.

The Israeli security forces fired stun grenades, while dozens of worshippers threw stones and fireworks, police said.

A video obtained by Reuters shows Israeli border police entering one of the gates of the mosque compound and explosions from stun grenades and fireworks could be heard. Reuters could not independently verify the video.

According to Palestinian local media, Israel barred men and women under the age of 50 from al Aqsa mosque complex, the city's most sacred Muslim site.

Palestinian medics said 15 suffered minor injuries.

The site of the mosque, where Muslims believe the Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven and the third most important shrine in Islam, is known to Jews as the Temple Mount, also revered in their religion.
