UKRAINE: ACTIVISTS LAUNCH 'BLOOD BUCKET CHALLENGE'
Another twist on the famous “Ice Bucket Challenge” has hit the web. In this video the icy water has been replaced by red liquid, to symbolize the blood of the Ukrainian people. The video, recently posted online, comes with a clearly stated objective to raise international awareness of the current conflict in Ukraine and the impact it is having on the people who live there.
Called the “Blood Bucket Challenge”, it was inspired by an anti-war performance staged in Kiev last week, by activists from the Ukrainian FEMEN movement. One of the activists stands facing the camera, with “Stop Putin`s war” written on her body, as fake blood is thrown all over her. Vladimir Putin is accused, amongst other things, of stirring up tensions in areas held by pro-Russian separatists.
And the performance has certainly grabbed web users’ attention; many like the people in these videos, have followed FEMEN`s lead and shown solidarity with the people of Ukraine. And those who don’t want to pour red liquid over their heads but want to contribute to the cause, can help spread the campaign message on social media and raise awareness under the #bloodbucketchallenge hashtag.
And many have been praising the concept of the challenge. Saying it is an original way to keep the ongoing conflict in the public eye, after long weeks of fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops.
