An unexpected discovery was made inside a Vatican City diplomatic car. Cocaine was reportedly found inside the vehicle which had been in France at the time.

The auto showcased diplomatic plates connected to the Holy See. The car belongs to 91-year-old Cardinal Jorge Mejia, from Argentina.

Two Italian man, aged 30 and 41, had been in the vehicle when it was stopped. They were allegedly told by Mejia’s private secretary to take the car for a routine mechanical service.

The males took the car to Spain instead. There, they bought about 9 pounds in weight of cocaine and drove off to France.

It’s suspected they thought the vehicle’s diplomatic plates would help them stay under the radar and away from police suspicions. They were very wrong.

On Sunday, the pair was stopped in the French Alps, as they were heading back to Italy. Officers soon located the drugs stashed away in suitcases and bags.

A Vatican spokesperson commented “Cardinal Mejia is not well and obviously has nothing to do with this. It’s now up to the police to pursue their investigations.”
