Local Motors recently created a 3D printed car called Strati.

The vehicle was made during the six-day long International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago. Local Motors partnered with Cincinnati Incorporated, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Association for Manufacturing Technology to make the car a reality.

The Strati is a two-seat, electric auto that has a top speed of 40 miles per hour and a range of up to 120 miles. Experts used a process known as Broad Area Additive Manufacturing for the 3D printing of the Strati.

Staffers at Scientific American say the vehicle was built in about 45 hours. Less than 50 parts were used in the final product. Items including the battery, motor and glass windows were added after.

The Strati project isn’t just an experiment. Local Motors hopes to market the vehicle sometime this year for a price of up to 30 grand.

CEO John Rogers remarked “We expect in the next couple of months printing a complete car to be below 24 hours and then eventually get it below 10 hours, down from 45 hours currently."
