according to vogue magazine, big butts are in style now.

the piece should more specifically say, 'we are currently in another era where features traditionally cherished by the darker peoples of the world are now cherished by europeans, because we see those who look like us have those features now.' the interesting thing is, one of the people they are celebrating appropriates what she thinks 'black culture is', and those who defend her choose to ignore the institutional (and individual) racism towards the 'aboriginal' people of australia and new zealand.

the person who wrote this piece ignored the history of the celebration of curves over time- from 'ms. fat booty' to dozens of blues songs; we are never short of cultural appreciation for a woman's ample backside.

we had bo derek with the braids, angelina jolie with the lips... she is just repeating an all-too recent history she is not even aware of. i mean, she mentions sir mix-a-lot but did it as an afterthought (since his song was sampled). the way this article was written was reminiscent of the time sara baartman (aka 'hotentot venus') was stolen from her homeland, to be put on display for white eyes. then white people recreated this look through fashion. she didn't have a choice in the matter, but women today do, and they willingly capitalize upon the white gaze. it may be 'financially' benificial, but to claim that it has moral benefits would be in denial.
