The economic crisis that has left more than five million people unemployed in Spain is also changing the behavior of many Spaniards.

The crisis has led many aid organizations in Spain to see more volunteers coming to their aid with small donations and with their time.

However, as a consequence of the economic crisis many professional workers with special skills are losing their job, which in turn is transforming the profile of the new volunteers.

Spain has been witnessing protests in recent years since its economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008. The Spanish government has promised the European Union it will lower its public deficit.

A fifth of the population in Spain is living under the poverty threshold as defined by Eurostat, the European Union statistics office.
