Cuban migrants rescued from sea

A boat carrying Cuban migrants has been intercepted off the coast of Colombia.

30 men and nine women were rescued by the Colombian Navy during a routine patrol near the Panamanian border.

The group was headed towards Central America, to then make their way north to seek entry into the U.S.

Caribbean Coast Guard officials say it's not just Cuban migrants who attempt the journey.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CAPTAIN MAURICIO ECHANDIA, CARIBBEAN COAST GUARD COMMANDER, SAYING:

"The activity we've seen involves, above all, Cubans, but we've also witnessed Asians and Africans also who are specifically looking for these routes so they can get to Central America and, later, the United States."

Two Colombian crew members were taken into custody and charged with human trafficking.
