A Russian foreign ministry spokesman said that if the US begins airstrikes in Syria, it will be considered ‘a gross violation of international law.’

He also declared such measures would be deemed an ‘act of aggression’.

The statements came the day after President Obama announced that he had authorized United States military action against the Islamic State in both Syria and Iraq.

Russia’s envoy to the UN also commented on the potential repercussions of the US engaging in battle in Syria without a prior consultation with UN countries.

He said, “Respect for international law is necessary so that the international community is able to take consolidated actions on a problem as complicated as this one and if it the US opts for such actions, its choice will be highly regrettable and will create obstacles for further cooperation.”

Led by President Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian government’s take on the matter is that they would like to be consulted before any combat takes place.

Should they not give their consent any actions the US takes against the Islamic State in Syria will be considered aggressions against the country itself.

In the past they’ve offered to help the US fight the jihadist group, but officials ruled against accepting the assistance. The US instead intends to offer support to the Syrian opposition who are fighting both the Islamic State and Assad’s government.
