On Sunday afternoon, a young boy was attacked by a mountain lion. The incident occurred on a hiking trail near a winery in Cupertino, California.

At approximately 1 p.m., the six-year-old boy was removed from the path in the Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve and taken to the winery, where paramedics arrived to render aid.

The child had been with his parents and another family on the trail. Reportedly, he was 15 feet ahead of them when the mountain lion grabbed him.

Warden Travis Jarrett further elaborated “The cat did make contact with the boy, did end up taking him into a brushy area and his parents did fight the animal off and the boy's in the hospital right now.”

The child was bitten on his shoulders and head. Fortunately the injuries aren't life-threatening.

Not long after the attack, deputies and California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers closed off hiking trails to search for the mountain lion. If it is captured, the animal will be euthanized and tested for rabies.

The area where the incident occurred is a known mountain lion habitat. Experts say the best way to handle a mountain lion encounter is to confront the animal by making noises or throwing objects.
