A couple who has been married for over 70 years recently underwent heart surgery on the very same day.

Raymond and Maizie Huggins from West Virginia were diagnosed with coronary artery disease and neither one thought they would live to see their 74th wedding anniversary on October 10th.

96-year-old Raymond and 93-year-old Maizie decided to do something about their declining health. Maizie explained “We went to the supper table one night and Raymond said, ‘If you have it done, then I will have it done’…. We went in together, had it done together and came home together.”

Both Raymond and Maizie had stents put in last year, but they were failing. Right in the nick of time, a new heart valve replacement surgery became available and concerned doctors put the couple on the list to undergo the procedure.

The couple arrived at the Cleveland Clinic for transcatheter aortic valve replacement. The non-invasive operation has been done many times before, however the couple needed a smaller valve, which was just approved in June of this year.

Now the couple is back home recovering. One of the many things they’re looking forward to is celebrating their anniversary next month.
