STORY: U.S. President Barack Obama was among a swathe of world leaders who arrived at Cardiff Castle on Thursday for a working dinner which closed the first day of the NATO summit in Wales.

President Obama and his 27 allies are meeting at a golf resort near Cardiff, the principality's capital.

Top of the agenda are issues such as Ukraine, how to tackle Islamic State straddling parts of Iraq and Syria, which has emerged as a new threat on the alliance's southern flank, and how to stabilize Afghanistan when NATO forces leave at year's end.

All of NATO's 28 member countries are represented at the summit, with 4,000 delegates attending amid a huge security operation.
