Russia says Ukraine should start talks about statehood in the country’s south-east.
This is the first time that Putin has talked about statehood in eastern Ukraine where a civil war is going on. Putin’s spokesman says however that the Russian president doesn’t urge for separation of Ukraine’s eastern regions and that they should remain part of Ukraine. He says Putin just called for a dialogue between Kiev and the breakaway regions. The two Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine unilaterally declared independence from Kiev in May. They also called on Russia to consider accepting the region’s integration. Russia hasn’t publicly supported the appeal.
