Iraqi Kurdish forces have entered the Zumar area northwest of Mosul to take it from the grip of the ISIL Takfiri terrorists.
Local media in Erbil have reported that the Peshmerga troops are engaged in fierce battles with the ISIL militants for control of the district. The Kurdish forces reportedly launched the offensive after capturing the Ain Zala oilfields just outside of Zumar on Wednesday. They also retook the strategic town of Mount Batana , overlooking the Izadi region of Zumar. After these gains, the ISIL militants set ablaze at least three oil wells while retreating from positions lost to the advancing Kurdish troops. The Peshmerga have recently been able to recapture several ISIL-controlled towns after receiving arms.
