Volcanic eruption in Iceland puts aviation authorities on high alert
  • 10 years ago
A volcano began erupting overnight on Thursday in Iceland, leading aviation authorities to raise the warning level to red, the highest level of significance.

So far no volcanic ash has been detected, Iceland authorities said.

A fissure eruption of about 1km long started in a lava field north of the Bardarbunga volcano, part of a large volcano system hidden beneath the Vatnajokull ice cap in central Iceland.

The area has been hit by several tremors over the past week.

The level red code means that an eruption is imminent or underway with a significant emission of ash likely.

Air Traffic Control has closed down the airspace above the volcano.

In 2010, ash from the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland shut down much of Europe’s airspace for six days.
