You can call Hello Kitty adorable, a friend, and even a cultural icon, but Sanrio, the company that makes her, prefers that you don’t call her a cat.

You can call Hello Kitty adorable, a friend, and even a cultural icon, but Sanrio, the company that makes her, prefers that you don’t call her a cat.

The shocking revelation was made in a statement issued by the company in advance of celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the character’s debut.

One of the events planned to celebrate Hello Kitty’s longevity and popularity is a retrospective at the Japanese American Museum in Los Angeles.

When an anthropologist from the University of Hawaii was in the midst of preparing the texts for the exhibition, she received a few comments and corrections from Sanrio.

Among them was the statement, “Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."

Upon hearing the news many were left in a state of shock.

There’s a lot that hasn’t changed, though. Hello Kitty is still a Scorpio, in the 3rd grade, and a beloved worldwide sensation.
