On Sunday, a former homeless man stepped on stage at the MTV VMAs to accept an award on behalf of Miley Cyrus. 22-year-old Jesse Helt seems to have straightened his life out in recent days, but court documents that were obtained by ABC News show his past is still haunting him.

Helt has a warrant out for his arrest in his home state of Oregon. Back in 2010, he was taken into custody for ‘attempted burglary’ and ‘criminal mischief’.

Later that year, the burglary charge was reduced to ‘criminal trespasses'. Helt confessed to attempting to enter an apartment by smashing a window. The whole thing was reportedly over a dispute about marijuana.

Helt accepted fault for his actions and pleaded guilty or no contest to the charges. A judge sentenced him to supervised probation and 88 hours of community service.

In 2011, an arrest warrant was out for him, because Helt allegedly didn’t show up for scheduled probation meetings. He also failed to submit urine tests.

In light of the warrant news, Cyrus took to Twitter to respond.

In one Tweet, she noted” The media never fails to disappoint. You've chosen to go after Jesse instead of covering the issue of youth homelessness.”
