Rebel planes attack Tripoli after militia claims control of airport

Libyan militia from the city of Misrata say they've seized the main airport in the capital Tripoli.

The fighters call themselves Operation Dawn.

They say they captured the main airport from a rival militia that hails from Zintan in western Libya.

Just hours later, unidentified rebel war planes attacked targets in the capital.

Residents there say they heard jets and explosions at dawn. Few details were immediately available.

The news comes after weeks of intensified clashes between militias.

Libya's seen its worst fighting since the NATO-backed campaign in 2011 that ousted former dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Reuters wasn't able to immediately confirm the change of hands at Tripoli airport, but if it proves true, Libya faces the prospect of two competing parliaments.

Operation Dawn has called for the old General National Congress to be reinstated while the House of Representatives had already moved to the east to escape the fighting.
