Dear Friends,
"WISH YOU ALL HAPPY MATRU DIN"

Sunday August 24th 2014 is Matru Din, Pithori Amavasya and Pola per Marathi Calendar. Goddess Durga is worshipped on this day.

On Pitori Amavasya, married women, especially mothers, worship 64 Goddesses for their children's long life and hence is called "Matru Din".
In the past, idols of these 64 Goddesses (Yoginis) were made of flour and some special recipes were offered to the Goddesses. "Pith" means flour by which the name comes into existence. Legend has it that the importance Pithori Amavasi vrat was narrated to the wife of Lord Indra by Goddess Parvati. It is believed that performing this vrata will help in attaining healthy and brave sons.

In the Somvavshi and Sheshvanshi Kshatriya communities, one of the customs at the celebration includes the elder daughter-in-law of the family asking children, "Kholapur chi vaat kuthali?" (Which way is for Kholapur?) – three times. They answer "hich hich " (this way, this way). Then she asks "Maza atithi kon? (Who is my guest?) "to which the children reply "mich mich" (I am, I am).
After this she gives out prasad (ritually blessed sweets) of pithori aai.
