Search resumes for Hiroshima landslide survivors

An ugly gash on the hillside marks the spot, and hope has all but run out for the 43 people still missing. Japanese rescue workers have resumed their search for survivors in the Hiroshima landslide.
Heavy rain prevented any work on Friday, but come dawn on Saturday the diggers were started up again and teams moved in. In all more than 3000 rescuers and volunteers are taking part in the rescue and clean-up operations.
“Maybe it’s faster to use heavy machinery. But I think we need human power as well. I want to help the people here in any way I can,” said one man.
More than 2,400 people are still in shelters while another 4000 were ordered to evacuate their homes as further landslides are possible.
Another 164,000 were advised to evacuate, although it is unknown how many have heeded the call. Forty -two people are confirmed dead, and local police warn that figure could rise.
