Tragically, a fisherman was killed by a crocodile right in front of his wife. On Monday, the 57-year-old man was out fishing with his spouse along the Adelaide River in Australia.

Together, the couple had been near the water’s edge but at one point the man waded into the river to untangle his line. While he was in the water, a crocodile crept up to him and attacked.

His terrified wife ran for help after seeing her husband disappear in the water. Northern Territory duty superintendent Jo Foley elaborated, “The initial information is that she did not see him taken but heard a scream and then turned around and saw a tail splashing in the water. She is absolutely distraught.”

Wildlife officers and police responded to the scene to locate the male. They used multiple boats to scour the river.

The crews did end up finding the estimated 15-foot long crocodile, called ‘Michael Jackson’. He is a well-known, half-albino crocodile.

The reptile was shot but unfortunately it was too late, as it had already killed the man. The victim’s body was recovered hours after the search efforts started.

The Adelaide River is a popular crocodile home. There are signs in the area warning visitors that the reptiles are present and can pose a threat to humans.
