Israel and the Palestinians have agreed to extend the truce in Gaza by a further 24 hours, just minutes before the current cease-fire was due to expire.

It opens the way for agreement on a permanent truce, but it won’t be so simple.

Israel wants Hamas to disarm, a condition the Islamist group refuses.

The Palestinians want to see an end to the blockade of the Gaza strip.

The fragile ceasefire has been in place since August 11. Before then the conflict had claimed more than 2,000 Palestinian lives, most of them civilians. On the Israeli side 64 soldiers and three civilians have lost their lives.
