Iraqi and Kurdish forces say they’ve recaptured a strategic dam in the northern city of Mosul from the ISIL insurgents.
Troops and Kurdish Peshmerga forces, backed by US airstrikes, took control of the dam and two nearby villages. The ISIL Takfiri militants have denied losing control of the dam. They’ve been sweeping northern Iraq since mid June, executing a large number of soldiers and civilians. The US began airstrikes on ISIL positions earlier this month. The US raids began only after the insurgents shelled Kurdish forces defending Erbil where American personnel are stationed. Washington has said the airstrikes will continue against the ISIL whenever American personnel and facilities are threatened.
