The latest discovery made by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is the observation of a trail carved out by a giant boulder that is visible from space.

Scientists studying Mars have been making all kinds of fascinating discoveries leading up to the launch of a manned mission to our neighboring red planet.

The latest discovery made by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is the observation of a trail carved out by a giant boulder that is visible from space.

The trail measures about a third of a mile long.

It was left behind when an irregularly shaped boulder slid down one of the Martian slopes.

According to measurements of the shadow, the boulder appears to be about 20 feet tall by eleven and half feet wide, standing up vertically.

NASA officials noted: "The trail has an odd repeating pattern, suggesting the boulder could not roll straight due to its shape."

Pictures taken of the trail and boulder were captured using the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, known as HiRISE, onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
