Recycled Hemp Waste Can Outperform Graphene

It’s said that the organic material is just as effective, if not more so, than graphene, the current industry top performer.

Hemp cast-offs are also abundant as the portion of the plant used to make the carbon sheets is rarely incorporated into the manufacture of other hemp-based goods.

That makes it cost-effective as well.

Said one of the developers of the hemp alternative, "We're making graphene-like materials for a thousandth of the price - and we're doing it with waste.

The specific waste he’s talking about is the inner bark.

He and his team attained success by cooking it then dissolving some of the structural components.

The applications for the resulting product are many and include making supercapacitors for power tools and electric cars.

Among the biggest obstacles is that growing industrial hemp in the US is almost entirely illegal.

Small crops are permitted for some scientific purposes.

Cultivating it is, however, allowed in China, Canada and the UK, where it’s used for making clothing and building supplies.
