Brazilian media reports that presidential candidate Eduardo Campos of the Brazilian Socialist Party has died in a plane crash.

TV channel GloboNews says he was among seven people on board the private plane when it crashed in Santos, Brazil.

Smoke billowed from the crash site in a residential area as investigators cleared the area.

Five people were rushed to a local hospital, but their names and conditions were not released.

The jet was preparing to land when it crashed.

49-year-old Campos was running third in opinion polls, with the presidential campaign beginning to gain momentum.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
