Apple and Samsung have agreed to abandon their legal battles over patents outside the United States.

The two electronic giants have been engaged in disputes for years in a number of countries including Britain, France, Germany, Japan and South Korea.

At stake is ownership and royalties over several different technologies allowing the downloading and transfer of music, film and photos.

A joint statement said the deal “does not involve any licensing arrangements”, and they would continue to pursue existing cases in US courts.

The two firms are the biggest players in the smartphone and tablet PC market.
