Italy: Navy brings 1,500 migrants ashore in Salerno

The Italian navy has brought nearly 1,500 migrants ashore in the port of Salerno. The people were rescued by other Italian ships and boats in deep waters between Sicily and the Libyan coast.
Among the migrants, many women and children, some in need of medical care.
Over the weekend, two would-be migrants died when a boat carrying nearly 300 people sank off the coast of Libya. The bodies were of a woman and a child around nine years of age.
Since January, the Italian government has rescued 95,000 people fleeing from their countries. That’s just short of the 100,000 migrants previously expected for the entire year.
