WW1 centenary day ends with 'Lights Out' across UK

Dignitaries from around the world gathered in Belgium on Monday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.
The city of Liege played host to
British, French, Belgian and German representatives. When the German President Joachim Gauck spoke, he did so of the importance of remembrance, saying:
“Let us show not only in words of remembrance, but also by our actions in the present and in the future, that we have really learned our lesson.”
Prince Harry and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were given a warm welcome as they paid their respects in Belgium.
Around 17 million soldiers and civilians perished in the four-year conflict that plunged Europe into darkness.
Their loss was poignantly remembered in the UK, where households, businesses and key public landmarks turned their lights off for an hour, as part of the ‘lights out’ campaign. An initiative started by the Royal British Legion, a charity providing support to veterans and the service community.
