Are Early Releases Hurting Games and Developers?

Today I bring up an interesting topic...and it's the topic of indie gaming and early releases. Are all of these early releases of alpha and beta games actually hurting developers? Are people picking up early versions of the games and not sticking around until it actually gets full release?
