Mourners gather at the funeral for a 24 year old American born Israeli soldier.

His sister remembers her brother.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) YOUNGER SISTER OF MAX STEINBERG, PAIGE STEINBERG, SAYING:

"As I talk to you right now, my heart feels heavy because I can't explain to you how deeply I already miss you. But I know you're still in each and everyone of our hearts. And I know you will continue to always protect me."

Later U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry joined the family.

He told them he was in awe of their son and said America was proud of their son.

Outgoing Israeli President Shimon Peres also met the grieving parents.

Steinberg joined the army in December 2012.

He had been scheduled to return to the United States in November after military service.
