A garbage truck driver in San Francisco rescued a homeless man who fell asleep in a dumpster, and was thrown into the cardboard compactor in the back of the truck.

The driver is a twenty-year veteran of Recology, a San Francisco city recycling company.

When he heard pounding from the back of his truck, the driver shut down the hydraulic compactor system, and drove to the nearest fire station.

He was able to talk to the trapped man, and tell him that they were driving to the fire station for help.

Robert Reed, a spokesman for Recology is quoted as saying: “It’s probably an 8-foot tumble. There was probably already cardboard in the truck so he probably fell on that. And then there was probably cardboard that fell on top of him.”

Fire fighters, who said the situation was a first for them, were able to get the man out of the back of the truck with only minor injuries to his shoulders.

He has been taken to San Francisco General Hospital in stable condition.

The driver reportedly returned to complete his route later that day after talking to his company safety team about what happened.
