A 26-year-old man was killed Monday on Francis State Beach in Half Moon Bay, California. The victim, who has been identified as Adam Pye, was digging through the sand.

“It happened just after 5 o’clock right down there on the beach about 5:15 or so, Adam Pye was digging a hole and he dug a deep one, several feet over his head.” [Via KNTV]

By the time first responders got there, Pye was unconscious. Paramedics brushed the sand away from his head and opened his airway before spending 35 minutes digging to finally get his body out.

They performed CPR but were unable to revive him. Five weeks prior to his death, Pye graduated from Cal State East Bay, with a major in business communications.

Now his family is mourning for the hard-working man who had a future full of possibilities ahead of him. In light of his tragic passing, firefighters are warning beachgoers about hidden dangers, including digging too deep in the sand.
