Tragically, an honor roll student was recently killed in a go-kart crash. 14-year-old Kierstin Eaddy had been driving solo in an amateur go-kart race held by the Sports Car Club of America in the parking lot of the Texas Motor Speedway.

"She was racing this morning in a Formula Junior Race, the type of thing that she has done many times before. It all turned out tragic in just an instance." [Via WFAA]

According to witnesses, Eaddy continued driving at a high rate of speed even after she passed the finish line. The vehicle struck a braided cable so forcefully, the victim’s helmet was ripped off.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene to transport Eaddy to the hospital, but sadly there was nothing that could be done to save her life. She passed away not long after the accident.

Fort Worth police have launched an investigation into the crash, but thus far many people think the go-kart malfunctioned. Some speculate her brakes went out while others suspect she may have had a medical problem while operating the vehicle.

While police look into what went wrong, family and friends are left mourning for the sweet teen. Eaddy was involved in a number of charities including one that helps children with disabilities.
