Children spent a summer day cheering on the beetles they entered into a competition mimicking a Japanese sumo wrestling tournament.
About 400 children on Monday brought pet beetles to the annual event in Yamagata Prefecture, northern Japan.
Every match involved two contenders. The winner reached the higher position on a 70-centimeter pole in 30 seconds.
The children tapped the base of the pole and shouted to encourage their entries.
Some beetles started climbing fast, but ended up turning around before winning.
