Iraqi soldiers recapture district near Baghdad from insurgents

Smoke billows in a district northeast of Baghdad after Iraqi forces say they've wrestled back a group of Islamist insurgents there.

Heavy fighting lasted for more than 14 hours. A military spokesman says they were able to fight back militants who they said were part of the group known as the Islamic State.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MILITARY SPOKESMAN MAJOR-GENERAL QASSIM ATTA, SAYING:

"Security forces have managed to completely clear Al-Harouniya district and the area is now under the control of the security forces which have carried out a number of attacks over the past 48 hours and managed to clear the area, killing at least 59 terrorists and destroying five different vehicles."

A child was killed on Saturday in an Iraqi-led air strike in the northern province of Salahuddin, doctors there said.

One resident described his ordeal.
