Artists from the Arab world on show in New York City

The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City is hosting an exhibition of art from the Arab world.

The show entitled ‘Here and Elsewhere’ features artists from 15 countries.

Curator Massimiliano Gioni: “Obviously, it’s a giant part of the world and it would be naive, if not colonial on our part, to reduce it to a unified image. I think of the identity of the Arab world, or the Arab worlds in many cases, has been formed, actually, as a refusal of this idea of a fictional unity that was imposed by the West.”

The works highlights art which traces the adversity faced by Arab people through multimedia — photos, paintings, and videos.

Massimiliano Gioni continues: “They suggest to question main stream media or to be aware that history is not only written by mainstream media or by official histories. History is also written and recorded in the first person singular. It’s also told through individual stories, and I think that is also what is at the core of many of these works in this show.”

The exhibition can be seen at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City until the end of September.
