Richard Branson has cut beef from his diet and says he feels better, but he did it only partially for health reasons. The change was also motivated by environmental concerns.

In a blog post, the British billionaire outlines the stress that raising cattle has on the environment and urges others to take action in mitigating the damage.

He points out that livestock farming produces 14 and a half percent of all manmade greenhouse gas emissions.

Producing beef accounts for over 40 percent of that.

Branson also gives an example how current popular means of cattle farming are contributing to deforestation.

He says, “Last year, Brazil reported a 28% increase in Amazonian deforestation - 80% of deforested land in Brazil is then used for cattle farming.”

Water is another resource that’s greatly impacted, as it’s been reported that nearly 1800 gallons of it are used to produce a single pound of beef.

Branson urges people to switch to a diet utilizing the recommendations of the Harvard Medical School. It still allows one to enjoy eggs, fish, and meat while cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 36 percent.

The mogul says he’s been off beef for months, and it’s been, much to his surprise, pretty easy.
