The U.S government is aware of the crash in eastern Ukraine of a Malaysian Airlines jet and is seeking more information, a State Department spokesperson said Thursday.

"At this point we don't have any confirmed information about casualties, the cause or additional details," spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters at a press briefing. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to those on board, their families and their loved ones. We're closely monitoring the situation."

The plane went down Thursday near the village of Grabovo, sending debris across an area up to about 15 km (nine miles) in diameter.

Separatist rebels from nearby said they had seen the jet crashing but denied the rebels had shot the plane down.

All 295 people aboard the plane were killed, a Ukrainian interior ministry official said, blaming "terrorists" using a ground-to-air missile.
