A lovesick man who robbed an ATM on Valentine’s Day was recently sentenced in court. 22-year-old Ramsey Fakhouri will have to spend the next 6 and a half years of his life in federal prison.

Back on February 14th, Detroit-based Fakhouri along with an accomplice, Alexander Gerth, robbed an ATM staffer allegedly at gunpoint. Both men split the $26,000 acquired from the robbery at a bank several hundred miles away in Highland, Illinois.

According to prosecutors, one of Fakhouri’s motives for the crime was to buy his girlfriend, who he met at bible college, a $13,000 engagement ring. He also hoped a proposal would make their long distance relationship work.

The ATM was right outside the bank where his girlfriend worked. At first, she had no idea Fakhouri was behind the crime. The suspect reportedly comforted her after the heist, but never told her he was one of the men who robbed it.

The girlfriend later reviewed surveillance photos of the suspects from a Walmart near the bank and terrifyingly recognized Fakhouri. She confronted him and he admitted to the robbery.

Fakhouri pleaded guilty to the crime, as did Gerth. The weapon used in the heist was found to be a pellet gun.
