Leaders haggle over top EU jobs.

EU leaders met in Brussels on Wednesday to carve up the bloc’s big jobs for the next five years.

Heads of state and government are looking to pick replacements for European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, as well as a successor EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

One of the names in the frame to replace Van Rompuy is Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has been pushing for his foreign minister, Federica Mogherini, to take over from Ashton.

But his bid has been criticised by Baltic and Eastern European states which are wary of Mogherini’s perceived closeness to Russia.

A possible compromise candidate could be Kristalina Georgieva, Bulgaria’s EU commissioner.
