Chennai's 'classist' dress code

Diktat on clothing is often heard of but now a cricket club in Chennai refused entry to Madras High Court Judge, Justice D Hariparanthaman for wearing dhoti. DMK Treasurer MK Stalin raised this issue in the Tamil Nadu state assembly today while DMK chief M Karunanidhi and TNCC president BS Gnanadesikan said the government should step in to remove any kind of dress code in public functions. CPI has said that this is a clear example of medieval mindset. Justice Hariparanthaman went to attend a book release function at the club premises, organised by T S Arunachalam, a former Chief Justice of the High Court. When he alighted from his official car, some staff of the club told him that he could not enter wearing dhoti as they had instructions from the office-bearers not to allow anyone in the premises who violated the club's dress code.
