The United Nations Security Council has issued a statement calling for the reinstitution of a ceasefire reached between Israel and militant factions in Gaza in 2012.

“The Security Council members called for de-escalation of the situation, restoration of calm and reinstitution of the November 2012 ceasefire,” said Eugene Gasana, UN Security Council President.

Meanwhile the sound of explosions were reported in Jerusalem shortly after sirens wailed across the city.

Israeli officials say more than 500 rockets have been fired at Israel by Hamas since Tuesday, and Israel has hit more than 1,000 targets in Gaza.

One building in the south of Israel was damaged by an aerial strike. No people were wounded in the attack.

On Sunday, foreign ministers from France, Germany the United States and Britain plan to discuss the need for a ceasefire between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

They will meet in Vienna for talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.
