US teenager allegedly beaten by Israeli police released on bail in Jerusalem

A teenager from Florida who was badly beaten by Israeli police has been released from custody but told he will be kept under house arrest for nine days.

It is not yet clear why he is being investigated or what charges he might face.

15 year old Tariq Khdair is a cousin of Muhammed Abu Khdair, the 16 year old who was abducted and murdereded last week.

Tariq says he was visiting his uncle’s house in occupied East Jerusalem when he was attacked but couldn’t see who his attackers were.

“I think it was the police… I was watching a group of people and they came from the side of me and they grabbed me from the side of me,” he told reporters.

Tariq was born in the US and was on holiday visiting relatives in Jerusalem for the first time in a decade.

His father says the teen has been terrified as he speaks very little Arabic and no Hebrew.

Israeli Police say Tariq was among a group attacking officers.

Video footage shows masked police officer holding down and repeatedly punching and kicking a youth, thought to be Tariq, before dragging his semi-conscious body away.

The US has said it is “profoundly troubled” by the reports and urged a full investigation and accountability for “excessive use of force.”
